Become Han Solo through 3D capture… sort of

Starting pretty soon at Disney's Hollywood Studios you have an opportunity to be cast in carbonite! They're using technology similar to 123D Catch to capture your head. I can't wait to see some user created versions of this - have a feeling we might see some in the gallery here or on thingiverse!

Click through for more info - it is pretty neat.

“Go home view” – a short film using 123D Catch

go home view by gantelet

Now THIS is an interesting use of 123D Catch!

This video was submitted through our comments on the blog by French artist Stéphane Gantelet and I just love it. Definitely one of my favorite things done with 123D Catch so far.

You really just need to watch it - you won't be sorry! Haunting is a good way to describe it.

Here's the description of the film, google translated, from Mr. Gantelet's site:

Go home view "is an animated video that offers a tour of the subjective camera privacy of the home of Mr and Mrs Smith in Anger. Go home view starts where Google street view stops: at the door of the house. The technique used to capture 3D from photos gives a seductive and then turns nightmarish from inside this home and renewing the issues raised by the indiscretion of the digital image capture in the world and its distribution over the web."

3D chocolate printer

Last month, Choc Edge released a 3D chocolate printer, called the Choc Creator. You can preorder it now, and bidding is just about to end on ebay for the first one!

The video below should give you a better idea of how it works - I can imagine this could really take off in bakeries! Yum, chocolate.

123D Catch used on the Bay Bridge

To help to find a way to attach lights to the Bay Bridge for The Bay Lights installation, 123D Catch was used to capture a section of the cable on the bridge! The catch worked very well, and was 3D printed so the team had a nice scaled down model to work with.

I love seeing these practical uses of 123D Catch - it can really make a ton of things easier.

Check out the video above to find out more about the process and the project - it's awesome!

Make It Real contest – you could win a 3D printer!

Instructables is running a fantastic contest that is perfect for 123D users!

To enter, post an Instructable that has anything in it that was at least partially designed using a computer: a sticker, a 3D printed object, laser-cut files, an electronics schematic, and even an inkjet printer template. So long as something in your project involved computer design (a digital sketch, 2D files, schematics, or a 3d model) before you built the physical object, you're good to go!

This would be an excellent weekend project!

Check out all the rules and learn more about entering on the official contest page. And make sure to enter by June 4th!

Underwater Catch!

David Lang of OpenROV found out 123D Catch works well underwater too! The video above is a Catch of a starfish that was originally taken as a video - he pulled the Catch from stills. How neat is that? Click through to see the stills and learn a little more about it!

Want to be involved in Catching the Sphinx?

Bilal Ghalib of Autodesk & GEMSI is planning a "3DFLASHMOB!" to get a Catch of the Sphinx!

If you're in or around Cairo or know someone that is - pass on the invite! It's happening on Tuesday, April 24th at 9 AM and is sure to be a ton of fun. I'm really excited to see the results! If all goes well, people will be headed back to the Cairo Hackerspace to make a cardboard replica.

Check out the official facebook invite page and remember to pass it on!

Hyphae lamps

This fabulous lamp by Nervous System is fully 3D printed. I love the vein-like look of the lamp! It would be so hard to get this level of detail doing it by hand. Plus, it's made of math and science! Hooray!

They've also got a neat video in the product description. Check it out!
